Sometimes patent dates are a help, but they give you the front end of the date scale, and not always too exactly. Some razor makers put serial numbers on their razors, but we don’t always have the key to how the serial numbers fit to dates of manufacture. Gillette is one manufacturer for whom we have information on serial numbers and later date of manufacture codes that we can link to time. Razor Serial Numbers were impressed on all Gillette razors from until , and on deluxe models from until except for a period in This corresponds to the time King Gillette was directly associated with the business, and may have been at his insistence. These serial numbers were on the top of the guard, or sometimes the inner barrel. There were no razor serial numbers from until Razor Date Codes began in and used the same system blades had used since , a code that identified the year and calendar quarter of manufacture. These codes are found on the underside of the guard mechanism, or in cartridge razors, near the attachment mechanism for the blade.

Listen to this page About this Collection On September 27, , the Music Division of the Library of Congress re-created a typical concert of brass band and vocal music from mid-nineteenth-century America. That concert has become the starting-point for Band Music from the Civil War Era, an online collection that brings together musical scores, recordings, photographs, and essays documenting an important but insufficiently explored part of the American musical past.
The cornets and saxhorns that made up the all-brass bands of the s remained a popular, though decreasingly prominent, feature of American wind bands through the nineteenth century. Bands of this kind served in the armies of both the North and the South during the Civil War, in the field as well as for the entertainment of the officers. Most of the sheet music used by these brass bands, which typically existed only in “part books” for individual instruments, has long been lost.

Where do you find this? It looks early 20 th C to me. The symbolism is political, and indicative of some of the far right organisations pre ww2. Quite possibly Italian s The helmet is highly stylized and has the look of the type of kitsche item mass produced in Italy during Mussolinis dictatorship. The stars are not anything I’ve seen in anything actually ancient Roman. The axe and rods are of course the fasces, the ancient symbol of the authority of the roman consul of chastisement and death over the people who elected him.
Its where we get the word fascism from. The fasces were used by the Italian fascists in the same way the swastika was used by the Nazis. Another indication that this is 20 th C is the two items superimposed by the fasces, one of these appears to be a shovel. Can’t work out the other. Fascism is poorly understood in the contemporary world and is usually equated with Nazism. Unlike Nazism, fascism is not inherently racist.
The symbolism describes the underlying idea of fascism; a partnership between worker, business, church and state. Anyway, that’s my take.

For the past couple of months, our neighbors and ourselves have been hearing the cry of an unusual animal. About a month ago, I caught sight of what appeared to be a large cat moving through the woods.
